Researchers at the University of Illinois have used the radioactive isotope 60-Fe to determine the distances of two supernovae blasts that occurred 3 million and 7 million years ago. The study found that the blasts originated 163 to 212 light-years and 359 light-years away, respectively. The team also discussed the potential impact of such blasts on Earth’s atmosphere and life, and the likelihood of future supernovae events.
