Polish mathematician Daria Michalik faced the retraction of two of her papers, published in 2016 and 2017, from the journal Topology and its Applications due to plagiarism allegations. The papers in question were found to have substantial overlap with an unpublished 1968 doctoral thesis by Zbigniew Furdzik, a Polish topologist. Both Michalik and Furdzik have ties to the Institute of Mathematics in Poland, highlighting the close-knit academic circle involved. The retractions, requested by the journal’s Editors-in-Chief, were based on independent reviews triggered by a complaint received in June 2023 about citation issues. Michalik, who is currently a researcher at Jan Kochanowski University, has not commented on the retractions. The incident underscores the importance of proper citation and the ethical considerations in academic publishing.
