“Eco-friendly” paper drinking straws may contain potentially harmful and long-lasting chemicals known as poly- and perfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS), according to a new study. Belgian researchers found PFAS in the majority of the 39 brands of straws tested, particularly those made from paper and bamboo. Despite their low concentrations, PFAS can accumulate in the body over time, posing a potential health risk. The study suggests that stainless steel straws, which showed no presence of PFAS, are a safer alternative.
