Adobe’s AI image generator, Firefly, marketed as an ethical AI tool, has come under scrutiny. Despite Adobe’s claims of using licensed images from its Adobe Stock library for training Firefly, a Bloomberg report suggests that some images may have originated from Midjourney, a competitor whose image sources are speculated to be unlicensed internet scrapes. Adobe acknowledges that about 5% of the images used in Firefly’s training might be from such sources but assures they underwent a rigorous moderation process. This revelation raises questions about the copyright safety Adobe promised, especially since Firefly was sold as a legally safe option compared to other AI generators, offering indemnity against copyright claims for enterprise customers. Despite these concerns, Adobe maintains that all images, including those generated by AI, are cleared of intellectual property issues through strict moderation. The company is also reportedly taking cautious steps towards developing an AI video generator, including compensating artists for their contributions.
