Apple Developing AI Tool to Help Developers Write Code for Apps

Apple is enhancing its Xcode development environment with an AI tool designed to assist developers in writing code for apps. This tool, akin to Microsoft’s GitHub Copilot, will enable developers to generate code through natural language requests and translate code across different programming languages. The AI is currently being tested internally with a potential release to third-party developers later this year.

The company is also exploring AI for app testing and is integrating AI features into Siri and other native apps, such as playlist generation in Apple Music and slideshow creation in Keynote. Additionally, Apple is working on improving Spotlight search with large language models to handle complex queries.

Software chief Craig Federighi has directed his team to focus on AI innovations for the upcoming iOS 18, iPadOS 18, and macOS 15, with iOS 18 expected to be one of the most significant updates since the iPhone’s inception. While some AI features will also be available on macOS, Apple is adopting a cautious, phased approach to AI integration, with certain functionalities slated for release over the coming years.
