Dow Jones Sues AI Firm Perplexity for Copyright Infringement, Sparking Industry-Wide Debate

Rupert Murdoch’s Dow Jones, the parent company of the Wall Street Journal and the New York Post, has filed a lawsuit against the AI company Perplexity, accusing it of illegally using their copyrighted material to train its AI and divert traffic from their platforms. The lawsuit alleges that Perplexity’s business model relies on exploiting News Corp’s content, thereby harming their revenue and competing for the same audience. News Corp CEO Robert Thomson criticized Perplexity for not compensating for the material used and presenting it as an alternative to the original sources. This legal action highlights the broader issue within the news industry regarding AI tools’ use of copyrighted content without permission, posing a threat to their business. Earlier, News Corp had reached a licensing deal with OpenAI, which Thomson praised for its integrity, contrasting it with Perplexity’s approach. The lawsuit follows a similar action by The New York Times against Perplexity and a previous lawsuit against OpenAI for copyright infringement.
