Google NotebookLM Adds Customizable AI-Powered Audio Overviews for Deeper User Engagement

Google has updated its NotebookLM tool to enhance user interaction with its unique Audio Overviews feature. NotebookLM, which was introduced just last month, now allows users to provide specific instructions to AI hosts for generating podcast-like discussions tailored to their preferences and audience.

The functionality of Audio Overviews involves a lively discussion generated by two AI hosts based on the research or notes uploaded by the user. These discussions are not intended to provide a comprehensive review but rather reflect the user’s input and the materials provided. This feature represents an interactive way to engage with content, emphasizing user-driven customization.

To tailor a conversation, users need to open their notebook within the NotebookLM application, navigate to the “Notebook guide,” and then select the “Deep dive conversation” option. After selecting “Customize,” users can input specific directions for the AI hosts, prompting the generation of a tailored discussion.

Moreover, Google has removed the “experimental” label from NotebookLM, signifying its readiness for broader use. New enhancements include background listening capabilities, allowing users to listen to AI-generated discussions while they continue working within the app. Additionally, Google has incorporated features that enable deeper analysis of YouTube videos with transcriptions, expanding the versatility of NotebookLM.
