Ubuntu 25.04 May Replace initramfs-tools with Dracut: What It Means for Users

Ubuntu is on the brink of a significant update by considering the replacement of initramfs-tools with Dracut for generating initial ramdisk images. This consideration is being made for the upcoming Ubuntu 25.04 release. Currently, Dracut is included in the Ubuntu 24.10 archive and is operational on most systems, suggesting a potential full-scale adoption in the future.

Originally developed by Red Hat, Dracut is already in use by major Linux distributions such as Fedora, RHEL, and openSUSE. This marks a shift towards standardizing Ubuntu’s underlying technologies with those used in other major Linux ecosystems, potentially enhancing compatibility and maintenance.

However, there are specific challenges noted with Dracut’s integration into Ubuntu. Currently, it cannot support systems booting from an encrypted ZFS volume, nor does it integrate with the Plymouth boot splash screen. Other notable issues include the lack of support for iSCSI boot and compatibility problems with kdump-tools.

Canonical is actively seeking community input to test Dracut in Ubuntu 24.10, aiming to resolve these issues before deciding on its adoption. This community-driven approach helps ensure that any transition to Dracut caters to the diverse needs of Ubuntu users.
